The Hawaii jeans are one of Sugar Cane's signature annual releases, celebrating the brand's long-standing connection to the Hawaiian Islands through exclusive fabrics and distinctive detailing.
This edition is constructed from Sugar Cane's original Lot. 401 denim, woven from a unique blend of cotton and recycled sugar cane fibres (bagasse). Harvested after sugar production, bagasse is spun together with cotton to create a fabric with a rich, irregular texture and remarkable depth. Naturally occurring amino acids within the sugar cane fibres also contribute antibacterial, deodorising, and antistatic properties.
The denim is dyed with Hawaiian indigo, producing a vivid blue tone with pronounced slub character and exceptional fading potential. Woven on vintage shuttle looms, the 14.25 oz Japanese selvedge denim develops high-contrast fades, pronounced whiskering, and vertical streaking as it softens and ages. A subtle sweetness from the sugar cane fibres is another characteristic unique to this fabric.
Inspired by Sugar Cane's celebrated 1947 jeans (Lot No. SC41947), the Hawaii features a timeless regular straight fit with classic proportions and an authentic vintage silhouette.
Exclusive details distinguish this model from the rest of the Sugar Cane collection. The waistband patch is crafted from hair-on horsehide and branded with a Hawaiian sea turtle—an enduring symbol of good fortune and a revered messenger of the gods in Hawaiian culture. The rear pockets are finished with hand-sewn sashiko stitching using heavyweight sugar cane cotton thread in a traditional Japanese pattern, while the pocket bags are made from fabric inspired by vintage Japanese sugar sack cloth. A distinctive green-line selvedge ID completes the fabric and identifies it as the Hawaii model.
Each pair is supplied in Sugar Cane's One Wash finish, having been rinsed once in cold water to remove virtually all shrinkage while preserving the character of the denim. The jeans are ready to wear straight away with minimal additional shrinkage expected.
